Google Business Profile tips that actually matter for local services
If you run HVAC, plumbing, electrical, cleaning, dental, medspa, or a similar local service business, your Google Business Profile (GBP) is often the first “website” customers trust — even before they click through to your real site.
You do not need a 40-point SEO audit. You need a clean profile and a weekly habit.
1. Get the basics boringly correct
- Primary category that matches what people search (e.g., Plumber, HVAC contractor, Cleaning service).
- Secondary categories only if you truly offer those services.
- Service area set accurately — do not claim cities you will not serve.
- Phone and website that match what you use everywhere else (NAP consistency).
- Hours that reflect reality, including holidays.
Inconsistency across Google, your site, Yelp, and Facebook confuses customers and algorithms. Pick one format for your business name and stick to it.
2. Services list beats vague “we do it all”
Add specific services customers search for: AC repair, drain cleaning, panel upgrade, move-out clean, teeth whitening consult — whatever is true for you. Vague descriptions waste ranking potential and make quote calls longer.
3. Photos: proof over polish
You do not need a studio. You need recent, real photos: van/branding, team (with consent), job-site work (privacy-safe), before/after where appropriate, and the front of your shop if you have one. Upload a few every month. Outdated photos signal an inactive business.
4. Posts: consistency over virality
Google posts will not magically put you #1 overnight. They do show you are active. Two to three posts per week with a clear next step (call, book, reply) outperform one perfect post per quarter.
If writing is the bottleneck, use a swipe file. OwnerOps sells a 30 Google Business Profile Posts pack ($27) built for local service pros — copy, customize, publish.
5. Reviews + owner replies
Ask happy customers. Reply to every review — thank-yous for positives, calm invitations to fix issues for negatives. A profile with steady reviews and human replies beats a static page with a five-year-old last photo.
6. Q&A: seed the real questions
People ask about service areas, emergency fees, brands you work on, financing, and whether you serve commercial jobs. Add fair Q&A yourself (transparently as the business) so the first answer customers see is accurate.
7. Weekly 20-minute GBP habit
- Respond to new reviews
- Publish one post
- Add 1–2 photos if you have them
- Check insights for calls/direction requests (directional, not gospel)
What to ignore (for now)
Fancy citation blasts, buying reviews, keyword-stuffing your business name, and “guaranteed #1 map pack” pitches. Those create risk and rarely build a durable business.
